VICENZA
Vicenza is a city in the Veneto region renowned for its rich artistic and architectural history, especially the works of Andrea Palladio. Here are five highlights not to be missed when visiting this elegant Italian city:
Villa La Rotonda: one of Palladio's most famous villas, Villa La Rotonda is a masterpiece of symmetry and classical design. Built as a private residence, the villa features an imposing façade with columns and a majestic portico on each of its four sides, reflecting the harmony and proportions of classical architecture.
Teatro Olimpico: last designed by Andrea Palladio and inaugurated in 1585, the Teatro Olimpico is the first permanent covered theatre of the modern era. The interior presents an incredibly realistic illusion of depth, with streets that seem to extend for hundreds of metres. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a monument to Renaissance creativity.
Basilica Palladiana: with its iconic Renaissance loggia, the Basilica Palladiana is a symbol of Vicenza. Originally a Gothic building, it was transformed by Palladio in the 16th century. It now hosts art exhibitions and cultural events, and its terrace offers a breathtaking view of the city.
Piazza dei Signori: the heart of Vicenza's social and cultural life, this square is surrounded by historic buildings, including the Basilica Palladiana. It is a lively place where locals and tourists meet, surrounded by cafés and shops under elegant arcades.
In the city surroundings you can find also:
Bassano del Grappa: this charming town is famous for its historic Ponte degli Alpini, a wooden structure designed by architect Andrea Palladio that crosses the river Brenta. Bassano del Grappa is also renowned for the production of grappa, an Italian distillate appreciated all over the world, which can be tasted in the many local distilleries.
Marostica: known for its living chess game, which takes place every two years with costumed actors on a life-size chessboard in the main square, Marostica is a town nestled in the Veneto hills. Its medieval castle, which dominates the town from above, offers a spectacular view of the surroundings.
